Pop Up News Room
Learning Journalism Through Real Community Conversations
During our recent pop-up newsroom experience, I had the opportunity to step outside of the classroom and engage directly with the community something that truly reminded me why I chose journalism. Instead of simply reporting from a distance, our group created a live, interactive space where people could share their experiences and perspectives in real time. Our team worked collaboratively to make the project successful. Elijah held the sign to attract attention and invite participation, Sherlyn led conversations and asked thoughtful questions, Dupree captured photos that documented the moment, and Sean organized names and contact information from participants. Seeing each person take on a role showed me how essential teamwork is in journalism. Every position mattered, and together we created a system that allowed us to gather meaningful responses efficiently.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was how important approachability is when reporting. People were more willing to open up when they felt comfortable and included. This reinforced the idea that journalism is not just about asking questions it’s about building trust and creating an environment where voices feel heard.
I also enjoyed observing other groups during the pop-up newsroom. Some teams experimented with creative engagement strategies, like interactive signs or different question prompts, which showed how diverse storytelling approaches can be. Seeing how others connected with the public inspired me to think more creatively about audience engagement and community-centered reporting.
Overall, the pop-up newsroom helped me develop real-world skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, and on-the-spot problem solving. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone while reinforcing core journalism values like listening, collaboration, and curiosity. Experiences like this remind me that journalism is most powerful when it happens directly within the community rather than behind a screen.#PopUpNewsroom #StudentJournalism #CommunityVoices #FieldReporting #CSULBJournalism #FutureJournalist #CollaborativeNews
